The Great Exploration in Math & Science Space
Science Sequence is a very flexible, hands-on
series of units that targets national standards
for 3-5 graders.
The unit topics include "How Big & How Far?",
"Earth's Shape & Gravity", "How Does Earth
Move?" and "Moon Phases & Eclipses". It is
possible to teach the units all during a single
years' course of study; or, individual units can
be taught each year over two to three years. Not
all of the units in a sequence must be
taught—each can stand alone as necessary. This
flexibility allows schools to determine when to
teach specific content based on their standards
and curriculum requirements, using integrated
units that naturally progress and build on prior
knowledge. Teams of teachers from a school
are encouraged to attend.
This workshop will provide lots of time to
become familiar with the lessons and practice
the activities. Experts from the
University of California Berkeley with team
teach the workshop with SD Discovery Center
staff in order to help build teacher's
background knowledge, too.
Sponsored by NASA and the SD Space Grant
Consortium.
