SD Discovery Center Registration

Registration Policy---

Online: Beginning at 6 AM on April 14, log onto www.pierreparkandrec.com

In-Person:

  • May 17 (one day only), 9:00AM -12:30PM,  SD Discovery Center
  • After May 17, City Recreation office at the YMCA, 900 Church Street.
  • Beginning June 9 SD Discovery Center.


    Registration Reminders:

    Fees on the website and in the summer Capitol Journal insert are the correct fees. Area businesses (listed on website and in Capitol Journal insert) have sponsored summer camps and classes, allowing the Discovery Center to decrease cost. Thanks, sponsors!!

    • Registration is on a “first-come, first-served” basis. Class sizes are limited so register early.

    *** If a class is filled, your child’s name will automatically be placed on a waiting list. If enough names are on the list, afternoon classes will be offered for all classes and camps that the SD Discovery Center offers (excluding Kids Helping Kids camps). ***

    • We plan to offer extra classes if we have enough children on the waiting lists.

    • Become a SD Discovery Center member and receive a discount on all summer classes.

    • United Way Youth Booster Fund Scholarships available upon request.

    • Snacks served at the Discovery Center will not contain peanuts. Please inform us of any food allergies when you register your child.

    Curious Kids!

    Build It!
    Date: June 11; 10-Noon

    Ages: 6-10
    Limit: Max. 25; Min. 10
    Skyscrapers, animal homes and people have something in common~~ a skeleton to support them. Build structures and experiment to see how much weight they can hold. Explore the fundamentals of robotics with our new Legos kits and try your skill at building manual and motorized contraptions.

    Get Set to be a Vet
    Date: June 18; 10-Noon

    Learn about veterinary science from a real veterinarian, Dr. Vicky Wilkey, and discover how to take better care of your pets at home.

    Nature Detective
    Date: June 25; 10-Noon

    Ages: 6-10
    Limit: Max. 25; Min. 10
    Using actual pelts, skulls, antlers, and other artifacts, learn about the critters that call South Dakota home. Learn to identify animal’s tracks and about predator-prey relationships. Head to La Framboise Island to look for signs of animals and make a plaster cast of animal’s track to take home.

    Is your child interested in the wonderful world of reptiles? If so, come join us for some slippery, slimy fun! Learn all about the life cycles and characteristics of reptiles in this fun class.

    Beginning Bug-ologist
    Date: July 9; 10-Noon

    Ages: 6-10

    Future entomologists will have fun creeping into this class filled with all things creepy and crawly! We will investigate insects that are good for our environment and those that aren’t. We will play insect hide and seek, look at bugs through a microscope, and journey through the garden to see things from a bug’s point of view. (See our Rawlins Library programs for other places to practice being a bugologist.)

    Knight Invader III Robot

    If you like to build things and like race cars, this class is for you! Build, and take home a super race car that is propelled by air and direct drive. Learn the basics of electricity and gear mechanism installation.

    Blow It Up!

    Make exploding pillows, examine the mysteries of Mentos fountains and experiment with different kinds of rockets in this exciting, yet SAFE class.

    You too can be like “Harriet the Spy”! Make disguises, do fingerprinting, and look at evidence under the microscope.

    Outdoor Adventure Camp

    Tuesdays; 9-Noon
    Get outside and explore some exciting, new activities this summer! Discover the fun of kayaking and fishing on our local waters. Mountain bike on La Framboise Island and go geo-caching (a bit like a scavenger hunt using a GPS system) to find a hidden treasures. Local health care professionals will pay us a visit each week with fun tips on healthy living.

    This camp offers boys and girls a chance to discover an activity that they can enjoy for a lifetime. SD Discovery Center and Dakota Adventures release forms are required to participate. Make a healthy snack each week. Participants will receive an Outdoor Adventure Camp cinch bag.

    June 13 Summer Surprises
    Everything is blooming in this class! We will learn about flowers, rain, bugs and other fun, warm weather wonders. Through summertime stories, crafts and social play, we will appreciate everything that summer has to offer.

    June 20 Purr-Fect Pets
    Puppies, kittens and bunnies all make perfect pets. You will have a chance to meet some of these soft, cuddly pets and learn about the best way to take care of them.

    July 11 Beetles and Butterflies
    Did you know that insects make up the largest group of animals on the earth? If you like creepy crawly bugs and flitty, flying butterflies, come join us for some fun. We will go on a “bug hunt” in the park with butterfly nets and bug catchers, play sensory bingo outdoors, and make an insect to take home.

    July 18 Planes and Rockets
    Up, Up and Away! Have a blast with us as we create flying contraptions and launch them in our backyard. We will explore the science of flight in this highflying class.

    KidVenture Camps

    Life on a Farm!
    Date: June 16 & 17; 10-Noon
    Fee: Members: $15; Non-Members: $20 (tax included)

    Ages: 4-8

    Squeals of laughter will be heard by all as we spend these fun-filled days discovering all about life on a farm. At the Discovery Center, we will explore farm life through books, games and art activities. Making new friends, playing Farmer in the Dell, and mixing up a batch of butter will all be a part of the fun. Children will have a chance to experience farm life first-hand as we take a bus trip to a local farm on June17. There, children will see sheep, goats, horses and all sorts of baby animals and even go on a hay ride.

    Woodworking 101
    Date: July 7 & 8; 10-Noon

    Location: Riggs High School Woodworking Shop
    Ages: 10-14
    Limit: Max. 12; Min. 6
    Boys and Girls will jump right into woodworking, and create one or more kid-size projects to take home-- all easy. The class will be a relaxed and fun atmosphere with plenty of supervision from experienced craftspeople. Participants will learn to use basic tools. Find out why woodworking is a great hobby that can be enjoyed for a lifetime!
    Closed-toed shoes are required.

    Kids in the Kitchen
    Date: July 14 & 15; 10-Noon

    Ages: 8-14

    This innovative NEW cooking class will inspire, excite and feed the curiosity of growing gourmets. This camp will provide an opportunity to create something tasty in the kitchen, to have hands-on, up-to-your-elbows fun and learn many important kitchen skills. We will spend time discovering other countries and their cuisines. A lesson on geography, customs and cultures will be part of the mix. We will focus on healthful eating with some yummy creations and a visit from a registered dietitian. Chemistry, physics and math will be part of the educational experience. Each participant will receive a Kids in the Kitchen apron.

    Wizard School

    Calling all Muggles! If your child is a Harry Potter fan, he/she is the perfect candidate for Wizard School! Join us as we make wizard hats and wands, find out what makes our bubbling cauldron bubble and create some magic potions. We will play a game of Quidditch on the lawn and discover the mystery behind magic ink.
    Activities will incorporate science, drama, arts and physical activity.

    Discovery Center Badge Day Policy:

    • Registration is required for all Badge day events. Leaders or parents must contact the Discovery Center to register by noon on the day prior to the Badge Day. Call 605-224-8295
    • Programs will be held at the Discovery Center, 805 W. Sioux Avenue, Pierre SD
    • Cost for each Badge day is $9 per girl (tax included). United Way funds are available for girls in Pierre/Ft. Pierre troops upon request.
    • Leaders may be asked to help with the event.
    • Girls will either receive their badges the day of the program or badges will be sent to the leaders within two weeks.
    • Badge days are open to Girl Scouts as well as the general public.
    • Tennis shoes are required.

    Kids Helping Kids Summer Camps 08

    Kids Helping Kids Camps are funded by Turner Youth Fund through the Healthy Community, Healthy Youth Initiative. (More about Kids Helping Kids)

    Horse Science 101
    Date: June 10 OR 11; 8:30am-4pm Camp offered twice. Please specify date
    Fee: $15
    Ages: completed 3-4th grades
    Limit: Max.12; min 5
    Location: Meet at the Discovery Center and travel by River Cities Transit to the Melvin Ranch

    This camp will provide basic horsemanship and riding skills. Major emphasis on horse and rider safety and riding skill development. Riders will work on balance and get great exercise while learning a lifelong skill. Geo-caching will be integrated into the camp curriculum (Basic GPS usage integrated with horse and western objects and vocabulary) Snack, water, and lunch provided. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

    Horses, riding and horsemanship will be the vehicle for math and science experiences in this day camp. Emphasis on safety for horse and rider. Focus on young rider’s self confidence, fitness, skills, problem solving and goal setting for each child. Geo-caching integrated into the camp. Snack, water and lunch provided Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.

    Advanced Horse Science-“How the West was Won Overnight Camp”
    Date: July 8-9; 9am fist day until noon second day
    Fee: $25
    Ages: 6th -10th grades
    Limit: Max10 min 5
    Location: Meet at the Discovery Center and travel by River Cities Transit to the Melvin Ranch

    This horse camp is for the experienced older rider. Primitive camping and chuck wagon cooking required. Participants will do some serious horseback riding, provide care for the animals and develop leadership skills. Some trail riding for those who pass proficiency riding test. Horseback games and eventing experience. You will learn the practice of owling with an experienced bird watcher. Snacks and meals included. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes.
    Bring tent and overnight things-change of clothes, tooth brush, sleeping bags and pillow. Please no electronic devices.

    Discovery Adventure Overnight Camp
    Date: June 30-July 1; noon on first day until 3pm on second day
    Fee: $25
    Ages: 10-14
    Limit: Max. 12; Min. 5
    Location: Meet at the SD Discovery Center and travel by River Cities Transit to Campground #3

    You will have a blast at this fun sleepover camp! Set up your tents at Campground #3 and spend time fishing along the shore of the trailraces at the mouth of the dam. Learning to clean your own fish and cooking it up for dinner will be part of the fun. Spend time snorkeling and kayaking with guides from Dakota Adventures Inc. and go geo-caching (like an outdoor scavenger hunt) in the woods. Wear closed-toe shoes. Bring swimsuit, towel, flip-flops, change of clothes, pillow, toothbrush….. Fishing poles are provided for your use but you may bring your own if you wish. Sleeping bags are provided. Bring sunscreen.

    Cooking Up Culture
    Date: July 29; 9AM-2PM

    Location: Meet at the SD Discovery Center, travel by River Cities Transit to the Buffalo Interpretive Center

    Native American campfire cooking is on the menu for this NEW camp. Spend the morning acquiring an age-old cooking technique, creating dishes on an outdoor fire. You will help with all aspects of the cooking process, gathering wood, helping to make a fire, mixing, stirring and, finally, enjoying a delicious Native American lunch. Take a trip through time and learn how ancient Native Americans lived off the land with demonstrations from specialists at the Buffalo Center. Closed-toe shoes are required. Wear sunscreen.

    • Scholarships are available for all camps upon request.
    • Approved helmets will be worn in all horse camps.
    • Excessive wind may alter some camp plan.
    • All horse camps will require two parental release forms. One of these forms will need to be printed off and notarized by a licensed notary public. Bring this completed notarized form on the day of camp or send it in to the Discovery Center prior to the camp date. These forms can be found on the Pierre Parks and Recreation website, www.pierreparkandrec.com, Pierre Parks and Recreation office located in the YMCA, or the SD Discovery Center.
    • All kayaking camps require a release form. This form can be found on the Pierre Parks and Recreation website, www.pierreparkandrec.com, Pierre Parks and Recreation office located in the YMCA, Dakota Adventures, or the SD Discovery Center.
