"Watershed"
  • Watershed:
  • It’s where we live.
2
Everyone and everything that lives on land lives in a watershed.
3
If you live in the suburbs far from a river, lake or stream, you live in a watershed.
4
If you live on a farm or a ranch, you live in a watershed.
5
If you live on a reservation, you live in a watershed.
6
If you live in a big city, you live in a watershed.
7
You can explore your watershed from the land.
8
You can explore your watershed from the water.
9
Watersheds can cover a large area…
10
... or a small area.
11
South Dakota has 14 major watersheds.
12
Each of the 14 watersheds can be divided into smaller watersheds.

14
As water moves through the watershed, it can pick up pollutants which are eventually carried into the river, lake or stream.
15
In a developed watershed, water and pollutants flow into this drain…
16
… and then flow straight out this drain without being treated.
17

18
Lakes, rivers or streams that take in run off from well maintained land are cleaner than those that take in run off from poorly cared for land.
19
Help keep your watershed clean; it’s where we live.
