Governor
Designates April 13 - 19 as Earth Day
Governor Rounds designated April 13 -19 as Environmental Education
week in the following

Whereas: |
Environmental education
bolsters critical thinking, problem solving and service
learning skills in our K-12 students while addressing South
Dakota educational content standards; and
|
|
Whereas: |
Environmental education
contributes to the future economic, social and environmental
well being of South Dakota by preparing its students to
understand ecological and human systems and to participate
in the civic arena.; and
|
|
Whereas: |
Environmental education
encourages schools to partner with South Dakota’s numerous
and high quality community resources such as museums; nature
centers; zoos; science centers; aquariums; refuges; and
local, state and national parks; and
|
|
Whereas: |
South Dakota’s environmental
education community will have an opportunity to annually
feature its accomplishments on a national, state and local
level; and
|
|
Whereas: |
National Environmental
Education Week, coordinated by the National Environmental
Education Foundation in South Dakota in cooperation with
South Dakota educational organizations, agencies, schools
and groups will become an annually anticipated event. |
Schools, groups and individuals
throughout South Dakota are encouraged to hold special events or do special
activities in recognition of EE Week and Earth Day. This
year's theme is Carbon Footprints.
Suggested EE
Week/Earth Day activities:
Change a light bulb from incandescent to fluorescent.
Conduct a home energy audit (Energy
Smart Solutions for South Dakota)
Become more energy efficient at school (KEEP:
K-12 Energy Education Project)
Start a Nature Journal (Journaling
Resources)
Pick up litter in a public area.
Plan a day to minimize or eliminate the use of a car (walk,
bike, carpool, combine errands).
Start a compost pile.
Hang a line for drying clothes.
Plant wildflowers and/or trees.
Your good idea here!Educators and youth workers: If you
aren't prepared for this year's EE Week/Earth Day, make a plan to equip
yourself with high quality instruction and resources so that you
will be ready for next year. Attend a training in Project
WET, WILD, or Learning Tree.Become a member of the
Environment
Education Connections of South Dakota and subscribe to their
listserve.
