Call for Posters!
This year's Expanding Your
Horizons conference will feature
a Poster Session during the closing reception at the South
Dakota Discovery Center exhibit hall. Conference
attendees are invited to develop a poster that presents a
classroom activity or science fair project
What is a poster session?
A poster session is a type of presentation at a conference
or other large gathering which uses posters instead of a
speeches or slides as the primary method of communication.
Presenters at a poster session develop a poster that
shows a summary of research or the accomplishments of a
project.
During the conference, time is usually set
aside for attendees to walk through the poster session area
and visit with the presenters about their research or
projects. Having a poster at a prestigious or flagship
conference is an important professional accomplishment.
Why are you having a poster
session?
We are having a poster
session:
- To introduce girls to the concept of a poster session.
- To allow girls to practice developing posters.
- To provide an opportunity for peer to peer modeling of
involvement with science, technology, engineering or math.
- To recognize girls' scientific effort, achievement and
interest.
What do I need to do to be
part of the Poster Session?
- Sign up by emailing Anne
Lewis (annelewis@sd-discovery.com)
or calling 605-224-8295. Include the name of the
teacher or leader, the school or organization,
number of girls presenting a poster. If you
are submitting more than one poster, please note
that information.
- Identify a topic. Posters can
be on a project or unit studied in class (i.e. Rube Goldberg
machines from a machines unit on physical science), on a
science fair project, or a project undertaken as independent
study.
- Develop your poster.
Posters should be no bigger than 3 foot by 4 foot, include
graphics as well as text, and be readable from a distance.
Set up the poster at the SD
Discovery Center. We will be open the evening before
and early the morning of the Expanding Your Horizons
conference to allow you to set up without missing the
conference.
Be available at the reception
to talk about your poster and what you did. If a group
worked on the poster, then plan on taking turns to be
available so all may get a chance to talk about their work
AND enjoy the exhibit hall.More Poster Session Links:
